He’s Out There
Fortune cookies never prove to be boring. This evening after my family and I chowed down on Low-Mein and Orange Peel Beef, my fortune read “A romantic encounter waits for you in the future.” Being only 16, I do hope that future is a ways away - you know, once my braces are removed and I can drive my own car - but it got me thinking what I’d like from a (truthfully) boy. At this moment I am content with my guy friends who love to hear what I say and laugh at appropriate moments, all the while avoiding catty gossip and discussing my appearance. I’ll confide that recently my heart endured some damage from an actually cool individual. But that’s fine. Because I’m only 16. Young man, who’s out there - get ready for me! I’ll find you someday when we are both a little better than ourselves now.

How Sweet It Is
Turning sixteen is supposed to be the sweetest thing in the ominous teen years. From the moment we turn twelve until possibly our eighties, we reflect on the times we spent during that year. The shy romances, enduring our embarrassing parents and the feuds between friends. Sometimes the year feels tumultuous. But what does sweet really mean? To me, it’s more than just a banana chocolate muffin with frosted icing or those lollipops you get a Jack Astors along with your bill (OK, that is pretty sweet). I’d like to think that the bittersweet things are really the sweetest - those times where we laugh and the next day we cry. Those are when the valuable lessons are learned.
So when your frosting goes sour, don’t get upset. The next sweet thing is right around the corner. And what’d you learn? To take better care of those sweet things you have now.
Classic.
